Tour the Asturias Academy
The LWB crew have talked about the Miguel Angel Asturias Academy a fair bit, but we haven’t shown you the school! Here’s a bit of a photo tour so you can get to see the great place that has been created for these students.
The school itself is set off in an unassuming residential area. It’s located in Zone 1 of the city, but most of the students come from zone 3, an area that does not even have regular trash pick-up service. When the school started, they only had one floor. Overtime they built their second floor which is where the 6th graders and up have classes and, now, they are constructing their third floor which is where the library will be located as well as classrooms for more vocational studies.
The school graduates its students not just with a high school diploma, but with trade skills they can use. One of their graduates is working to save money for college and the Academy has hired him to do the electrical work for the new addition. Here’s a sneak peek at the current stage of the building process. Just imagine bookshelves and computers filling the space in place of those sacks of cement.
The school has come a long way since its inception in 1994! The vision is to expand and have similar schools in every province of the country and with this school firmly installed, that plan is soon to come.
